Disability Act 2005 Steering Committee

The Disability Act 2005 Steering Committee was established by LGMSB with the Department of Environment, Community and Local Government to assess the impact of the Disability Act 2005 and to assist local authorities in the implementation of the Act. 
 
The Steering Committee is chaired by a County Manager and comprises representatives of local authorities, the National Disability Authority, the Department of Environment, Community & Local Government and the LGMSB. 

Sub-Groups currently working under the aegis of the Steering Committee include:
  • Access Sub-Group;
  • Access Officer Network.

  • As a result of the 1999 referendum, Local Government is now positively recognised and supported in the most fundamental formulation of our law - Bunreacht na hÉireann.
  • Prior to the Local Government (Ireland) Act 1898 the administration of local affairs in Ireland was undemocratic and in a state of chaos with policy decisions made at a distance in London mostly serving the interests of landowners.
