Local Authority Accessibility

Welcome to the Good Practice in Accessibility site for Irish local authorities.

The aim of this site is to develop capacity in local authorities for implementing the National Disability Strategy. This will be facilitated in two main ways. First, good practice in accessibility in local authorities is showcased in our accessibility good practices page so that local authorities can learn from each other about how best to approach making their buildings, services and information accessible. Second, practical answers to questions, not only related to accessibility, relevant to local authorities are provided in the FAQ section.

The Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, in addition to several other Government Departments, published its Sectoral Plan in December 2006. The Sectoral Plan is one core component of the NDS which places a number of obligations on local authorities, some of which include key accessibility deadlines.

  • As a result of the 1999 referendum, Local Government is now positively recognised and supported in the most fundamental formulation of our law - Bunreacht na hÉireann.
  • Prior to the Local Government (Ireland) Act 1898 the administration of local affairs in Ireland was undemocratic and in a state of chaos with policy decisions made at a distance in London mostly serving the interests of landowners.
